2024 GrAND MARSHALL
The Glen Ellyn 4th of July Committee selects Village Attorney Greg Mathews as the 2024 Glen Ellyn Grand 4th of July Parade Marshal. Greg resides in Glen Ellyn where he has spent most of his life. He attended elementary schools in Glen Ellyn and high school at Glenbard West and in 1972 he set the football record for most yards passing in a single game for the Hilltoppers at 269, a record that stood for 43 years. Greg received a bachelor's degree at Yale University in 1977 and a law degree from Indiana University in 1980. He went on to work as a trial attorney for more than two decades, handling jury trials in Illinois and in several state and federal courts across the country, before he became involved in municipal corporate law and litigation.
Mathews was first appointed to voluntary commissions in the late 1980s, serving on the Cable Foundation and Cable Commission, as well as for the Economic Development Corporation of Glen Ellyn. He served as Village trustee from 1993 to 1997 and finished the term as Acting Village President on the unanimous vote of his co-trustees. Greg was elected to serve a single term as Village President from 2001 to 2005, and was also elected by the Presidents of Wheaton and Glendale Heights for service on the DuPage Water Commission. He is most proud of his efforts to help bring together the Glen Ellyn Park District, Glenbard West, and the Village to redevelop the fields at Village Green in a showing of intergovernmental cooperation.
In May of 2013 Mathews began service to the Village as its attorney as a private practitioner, and in 2014 the Glen Ellyn trustees voted unanimously to hire Mathews as Glen Ellyn’s in-house attorney. He also represented High School District 87 in injury litigation. After this long career of serving Glen Ellyn, Greg is retiring this summer. We thank Greg for his service to the Village and wish him well in his retirement.
